In order to simplify and expedite the processing of applications for permanent residence, Canada introduced the electronic selection system called Express Entry in January 2015. This system is specifically designed to select the most suitable candidates for various economic immigration programs. What is Express Entry?
Express Entry is a fully electronic system that is responsible for processing applications for permanent residence in Canada under three different immigration programs:
- Federal Skilled Worker Program

- Canadian Experience Class
Applicants for permanent residence in Canada undergo an evaluation process and are assigned a score. They are then placed in the Express Entry pool, which is essentially a database of applicants. Canadian employers have the option to select individuals from this pool.
It is important to note that the Express Entry system cannot be utilized by individuals who wish to settle in Quebec, as this province has its own unique immigration regulations.
Express Entry: A Two-Step Process
If you want to determine your eligibility to immigrate to Canada under any of the immigration programs mentioned above, you can utilize the online tool called “Come to Canada.”
Step 1: Filling out an Express Entry Profile
To start filling out your Express Entry profile, you need to create a MyCIC account. Once you have created an account, you can proceed with completing the Express Entry form. This includes providing personal information such as your education, work experience, and language proficiency.
Before filling out your profile, make sure that you have the following documents:
- Passport or travel document
- National Occupational Classification (NOC) job title and code
- Language test results
Additional information, such as Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) results, may be required based on your specific circumstances.
Step 2: Registering with Job Bank
After submitting your online profile, you must register with the Government of Canada’s Job Bank within 30 days, unless you already have a job offer or a nomination from a province or territory.
The Express Entry Pool of Candidates
If you meet the eligibility criteria, you will be placed in the Express Entry pool of candidates and assigned a score. A higher score increases your chances of receiving an invitation to apply for permanent residence. It is important to keep your profile up to date if there are any changes to your circumstances.
Applying for Permanent Residence in Canada
Once you are accepted into the Express Entry pool, you may receive an invitation to apply for permanent residence at any time. However, invitations are typically issued to candidates who:
- Have a job offer in Canada
- Have received a certificate of designation from a province or territory
- Have a high ranking within the pool of candidates
If you receive an invitation, you will have 60 days to submit your application for permanent residence. If you do not receive an invitation, your Express Entry profile will expire after 12 months.
Steps to apply for permanent residence include:
- Filling out an online form in your MyCIC account
- Submitting copies of all required documents
- Undergoing a medical examination
- Paying the permanent residence fee of 490 CAD (non-refundable)
- Submitting your application
