So, you’re interested in studying abroad, specifically in Germany, right? You’ve probably heard many fascinating things about studying in this country.
While I’m not sure exactly what you’ve heard, I can assure you that the positives are likely true.
Germany is indeed an amazing place to study, offering a unique and highly instructional Western education. There is also a wide range of English-language university programs to choose from, and the tuition fees are relatively affordable. In fact, it is even possible to study in Germany for free!
All public universities in Germany offer free undergraduate programs for both local and international students. So, if you are living outside Germany but aspire to study in this country, you are more than welcome.
Before you embark on your journey to study in Germany, there are a few things we’d like you to know:
- Germans are punctual: Germans value timeliness, so it’s important to be punctual for meetings and appointments. Consider getting a wristwatch or relying on your phone’s alarm to help you stay on schedule.
- Take your student accommodation seriously: Germans are known for their love of planning, so it’s wise to sort out your student accommodation before arriving in Germany. If you plan to stay in an apartment, check if your school has recommendations for the area. Otherwise, do some research to find suitable accommodations in Germany, as there are plenty of resources available in English online.
- Speaking German is great, but not essential: While it is generally recommended to have a basic understanding of the German language to study in Germany, it’s okay if you’re not fluent yet. Germany being an exchange student destination means you can easily access resources to help you learn German once you arrive. Your school may also offer language programs, and there are private language schools available that cater to various schedules.
- Different dialects of German: It may surprise you, but there are different dialects of German spoken in different regions of the country. Most Germans speak “High German,” which is the standard dialect used in about half of Germany, as well as in Luxembourg, Austria, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein. “Low German” is less common and only spoken in the northern regions.
- Germany is a wonderful study abroad destination: There have been numerous positive reviews from international students about studying in Germany, which means it is a fantastic study abroad destination.
