Commonwealth Short Story Prize Writing Contest 2024

About the Contest: The Commonwealth Foundation, an intergovernmental organization, was established to uphold the belief that the Commonwealth is not only an association of governments but also of peoples.

Program Overview: This prize, open to citizens aged 18 and above from Commonwealth countries, recognizes the best unpublished short fiction ranging from 2,000 to 5,000 words.

An international judging panel will shortlist approximately twenty stories, from which five regional winners are chosen.   • Entrants must be citizens of a Commonwealth country or stateless persons residing in a Commonwealth country.
  • Entries will be judged based on the writer’s country of citizenship.
  • The writer must be 18 years or older as of November 1, 2023.
  • Previous overall winners of the Commonwealth Short Story Prize and entrants who have won the regional prize three times are ineligible.
  • Current staff members of the Commonwealth Foundation cannot submit entries.
  • All entries must be unpublished until May 1, 2024, and if shortlisted or awarded in other competitions, they remain eligible if unpublished.

Application Process:

  • Entries, including translations, must be submitted by the original author.
  • Only one entry per writer is allowed each year for the Commonwealth Short Story Prize.
  • The submitted story must be the entrant’s original work.
